Code, Code, Revolution!
Are you too having problems updating your iPhone to OS 4.0 beta and iTunes crash while showing the message “Verifying iPhone update with Apple”? Use restore instead!
Also, it is possible to downgrade from iPhone OS 4.0 to 3.1.3 using the restore function and a firmware image for 3.1.3. The baseband however will not be downgraded.
With this blog I try to provide useful tips and solutions for programming .NET, Objective-C and more. My name is Björn Sållarp, and I love writing code.

Thanks for this, I only just spotted that the OS4 image file is called ‘Restore’ which I suppose should have given me a clue

I would have used restore in the first place if it wasn’t for the frightening message that says all of your data will be deleted. Hopefully we won’t have to reinstall each and every application.

I think it crashes because apple have altered the ‘buildmainfest.plist’ file inside the beta 2 firmware to not allow upgrade installs.

My guess is that they don’t want to allow upgrades because:
1, iPhone os beta is for development use primarily and development units usually doesn’t contain important information.
2. Apple want to avoid getting strange error reports on 4.0 that happen because of some questionable data stored in earlier versions.

@Samuel. Yes, you will loose your personal data. SMS, contacts, music, videos, apps, notes etc. It’s a factory reset. Make sure you store all your important stuff before restoring. If you have your phone connected to exchange that will take care of your contacts. iTunes takes care of apps, music etc.
You should make a backup of your phone in iTunes but i am not entirely sure i you can restore that backup once you’ve upgraded. My advice is not to take a chance and backup your most important stuff to your Mac/pc.

@Ben. Yes, I was able to restore SMS and Camera Roll from my 3.1.3 3G backup.

I can confirm that using Restore instead of Update to install Beta 3 works without crashing.

And you do have to then restore your data from a previous backup.
